Congress Reviews Performance in Punjab Local Body Elections

A review meeting was held in Delhi on Friday to assess the Congress party's performance in the Punjab municipal elections, revealing sharp disagreements among senior leaders. This meeting highlighted the internal divisions within the state unit as the party gears up for the 2027 assembly elections. The high-level strategy session, hosted at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, included prominent figures such as Rahul Gandhi, party general secretary K.C. Venugopal, and key leaders from Punjab. Discussions regarding the party's municipal election outcomes quickly turned contentious, with leaders questioning both the electoral results and organizational responsibilities. Reports indicate that the most heated debate centered around the party's poor performance in Gidderbaha, a stronghold of Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.

Concerns Raised Over Election Performance

Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi reportedly questioned how the party could perform so poorly in the stronghold of the state president while positioning itself as a strong contender for the 2027 assembly elections. Sources suggest that Channi argued that if the party failed to deliver results in such a crucial constituency, it needed to engage in serious self-reflection. Warring defended the results, claiming that the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) benefited from the use of government machinery during the municipal elections. However, another senior leader challenged this explanation, pointing out that Congress had achieved significant victories in places like Kapurthala and Chamkaur Sahib under similar political conditions.

Limited Participation in Campaigns Questioned

During the meeting, questions were raised about Channi's limited involvement in the municipal election campaigns. The former chief minister reportedly attributed his absence during a critical phase of campaigning to personal commitments abroad. Speculations regarding internal disagreements within the state leadership were further fueled when Punjab's opposition leader Pratap Singh Bajwa left the meeting before it concluded. Nevertheless, Bhupesh Baghel, Congress's in-charge for Punjab, later dismissed any concerns about dissent, stating that Bajwa had informed the leadership in advance and that his early departure should not be given undue significance.
