Congress Faces Dilemma in Kerala Over Next Chief Minister Selection
Congress Struggles to Choose Kerala's Next Chief Minister
Despite the United Democratic Front (UDF) securing a clear majority in the recent Kerala Assembly elections, the Congress party has yet to finalize its choice for the next Chief Minister. The party's leadership is currently grappling with the decision among three prominent leaders: V.D. Satheesan, K.C. Venugopal, and Ramesh Chennithala. This indecision has led to uncertainty among the supporters of these leaders, who are employing various tactics, such as putting up posters and flex boards, to pressure the Congress leadership into making a decision.
Sources previously indicated that K.C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala are the frontrunners for the Chief Minister position. Venugopal, a Lok Sabha MP from Alappuzha, is considered close to Rahul Gandhi, while Chennithala has been a prominent face of Congress in Kerala, having served as the state's Home Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. However, many within the party are advocating for Satheesan, a senior leader with a strong grassroots presence, known for his sharp critiques of the Left. His supporters believe he has ushered in a generational change within the Kerala Congress unit.
The ongoing public tug-of-war among party supporters regarding the Chief Minister position has drawn criticism from Congress leader K.C. Joseph. In a Facebook post, Joseph emphasized the dangers of airing internal party matters publicly, warning that such actions could lead to severe repercussions. He remarked that if someone spits while lying down, it will fall back on their own face, suggesting that this behavior is detrimental to all involved. He cautioned against trying to scratch one's head with a burning stick, labeling it as a disastrous approach.
Amidst this turmoil, Suni Joseph, the head of the Kerala Congress unit, stated earlier in the day that the decision regarding the next Chief Minister will be made by the party's central leadership. He informed reporters that he would be meeting with the AICC president for discussions, indicating that the announcement of the decision would come from the higher command.
