Guwahati, March 15: A Tough Road Ahead for Congress

The Congress party in Assam, having suffered from defections, is gearing up for a challenging battle against the BJP in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

Set for April 9, the elections are anticipated to be a direct contest between the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Congress-led opposition coalition.

Despite being out of power since 2016, Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the state unit, has taken a bold stance against the BJP and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

In this electoral battle, Congress must navigate the BJP's robust organizational framework, Sarma's dynamic leadership, and a series of development initiatives that have bolstered the ruling party's standing.

Given this context, an analysis of Congress's strengths and weaknesses as it prepares for this crucial contest in Assam is essential.

Strengths of Congress

The anti-incumbency sentiment against the ruling party could work in Congress's favor, although there are significant challenges ahead. To counter these, the party is looking to form alliances with the Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI(M), and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC) to confront the BJP.

Congress has a strong chance of winning over minority voters, especially Bengali-speaking Muslims, who have been alienated by the ruling party's policies.

Gogoi's previous victory in the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, despite the BJP's full support for its candidate, and his projected candidacy for the Jorhat assembly seat this time, could significantly uplift the party's spirit.

Additionally, allegations of corruption against Chief Minister Sarma and some of his associates may also favor Congress.

Weaknesses of Congress

Over the past decade, Congress has faced numerous setbacks in Assam, particularly after the current chief minister left the party to join the BJP, taking many members with him. The latest blow was the defection of former state president Bhupen Borah and three other MLAs to the BJP, while two others joined the Raijor Dal.

The lack of a cohesive organizational structure, especially at the grassroots level, poses a significant challenge, as evidenced by the shift of tea garden workers—once a strong support base—towards the BJP in recent elections.

Allegations made by the Chief Minister against Gogoi and his wife regarding alleged Pakistani connections could also harm the party's image in rural areas.

Opportunities for Congress

Congress has the chance to leverage the anti-incumbency sentiment to sway voters in its favor. This can be achieved by focusing on the corruption allegations against the ruling party and the humanitarian issues faced by minority communities due to various government policies, particularly eviction drives.

The party can also attract disgruntled members from the ruling NDA alliance to strengthen its ranks.

Moreover, the failure of the ruling party to grant Scheduled Tribe status to six communities, including Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Motok, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes (Adivasis), presents another opportunity for Congress.

Threats to Congress

The primary threat to Congress's ambitions in Assam stems from the ruling party's emphasis on its support base among Bengali-speaking Muslims, which may not resonate well with the dominant Assamese community.

The ongoing departure of key leaders and party workers continues to pose a significant risk to Congress's stability. Additionally, the organizational and administrative strength of the ruling NDA presents a formidable challenge.
