Congress Criticizes Government Over Student's Treatment

New Delhi: The Congress party has expressed outrage following the release of a video depicting an Indian student being forcibly restrained and handcuffed at a US airport. They are urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to urgently communicate with President Donald Trump to address the alleged 'mistreatment' of Indian nationals in the United States.

The video, shared by Congress leaders, shows the student being pinned down at Newark Airport prior to his reported deportation.

The Indian Consulate in New York has confirmed that they are in contact with local authorities regarding the incident, which has sparked significant concern online. They stated, "We are aware of social media reports about an Indian national encountering issues at Newark Liberty International Airport and are in touch with local officials."

Jairam Ramesh, Congress's general secretary for communications, criticized the Modi administration for failing to uphold the dignity of India and its citizens.

He remarked, "For the first time, a foreign leader has brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan without India's presence. President Trump claims to have facilitated this ceasefire by exerting pressure on India."

Ramesh further noted that Indian students and citizens in the US have faced ongoing mistreatment over the past year, questioning Modi's silence on the matter.

He emphasized that it is the Prime Minister's duty to safeguard the dignity of India and its people.

Ramesh demanded that Modi reach out to Trump immediately to seek intervention regarding the alleged mistreatment of Indians in the US.

Pawan Kher, head of Congress's media and publicity department, shared the video posted by Kunal Jain, an Indian-American entrepreneur, who described witnessing the distressing scene of the student being deported, handcuffed and in tears.

Jain expressed his heartbreak over the incident, stating, "This is a human tragedy; he came to pursue his dreams, not to cause harm."

Kher echoed Jain's sentiments, questioning why such humiliation should be tolerated and reflecting on the decline in India's standing on the global stage since previous incidents.
