Congress Defends Alliance with TVK Amid DMK's Backlash in Tamil Nadu

In a significant political shift in Tamil Nadu, Congress has decided to support the Tamil Nadu Vikas Katchi (TVK) while severing ties with the DMK. This move has led to accusations of betrayal from the DMK, which Congress has dismissed as a misunderstanding of coalition politics. Senior Congress leader Karti Chidambaram defended the decision, asserting that it aligns with the need for a stable government. As Congress prepares to announce further details in a press conference, the political landscape in Tamil Nadu continues to evolve, raising questions about future alliances and governance.

Congress Responds to DMK's Accusations

Following its decision to support the Tamil Nadu Vikas Katchi (TVK) and break ties with the DMK, Congress has dismissed the DMK's accusations of "backstabbing" as "unfortunate." Senior Congress leader Karti Chidambaram stated in an exclusive interview that the remarks made by the DMK spokesperson reflect a lack of understanding of post-election coalition dynamics. He expressed disappointment over the comments, emphasizing that the DMK does not grasp how alliances function after elections. Despite winning five seats in the assembly elections, Congress chose to back TVK, as it emerged as the largest party in the 234-member assembly with 108 seats, though it still fell short of the 118 needed for a majority. The party is also looking for support from smaller parties.

DMK's Reaction to Congress's Move

The DMK has labeled this decision by its long-term national ally as a "betrayal." Party spokesperson Saravanan Anadurai criticized Congress for aligning with TVK, claiming that they have deceived the people of Tamil Nadu and undermined the mandate given by the electorate. In response, Chidambaram clarified that such political maneuvers are common in parliamentary politics. He pointed out that in Europe, opposing parties often unite to provide stable governance.

Understanding Between Political Leaders

Chidambaram further remarked that DMK leader M.K. Stalin is an experienced politician who will comprehend Congress's actions, asserting that this is not an unprecedented situation. He expressed confidence in Stalin's understanding of political realities and the expectations of other parties. The senior Congress leader reiterated that the party aims to facilitate the formation of a stable and secular government, which is precisely what Congress is striving to achieve.

Respecting the People's Mandate

He emphasized that Congress is honoring the public's mandate. If every party involved in the elections were to remain rigid in their positions, a government would not be formed, which is not what the people of Tamil Nadu desire. TVK is also reaching out to other parties to gather the necessary numbers for government formation. Congress is expected to announce its decision in a press conference later today.
