Congress Calls for Diplomatic Engagement with Iran

New Delhi: The Congress party has expressed strong disapproval of US President Donald Trump's recent military actions against Iran, labeling them as contradictory to his calls for ongoing negotiations. The party criticized the Indian government for its lack of response to the US airstrikes and Israel's military actions.

Jairam Ramesh, the Congress general secretary responsible for communications, emphasized the urgent need for diplomatic discussions with Iran. He stated that Trump's military decisions undermine his own advocacy for dialogue.

Ramesh urged the Indian government to show more moral courage, pointing out its failure to condemn the US airstrikes and Israel's military operations, including targeted killings.

He also highlighted the government's silence regarding the humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians in Gaza.

These comments followed the US's bombing of three significant nuclear sites in Iran, escalating tensions in the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently expressed India's serious concerns to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding the conflict with Israel, advocating for de-escalation through dialogue.

The US's attack on Iranian nuclear facilities has raised alarms about a potential broader conflict, prompting calls for restraint from various international leaders.

Prior to the US strikes, Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, criticized India's inaction regarding the devastation in Gaza and Iran, describing it as a loss of moral standing.

In her article titled 'It is still not too late for India’s voice to be heard', she accused the Modi administration of straying from India's historical commitment to a peaceful resolution that includes an independent Palestine alongside Israel.

Gandhi also condemned Trump's approach in West Asia, labeling it as a 'destructive path' despite his previous criticisms of perpetual warfare.
