Congress Criticizes US President's Inconsistent Stance on India
Congress Leader's Remarks on US-India Relations
On Monday, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed his discontent regarding the attitude of the US President towards India. Despite the frequent displays of cordiality between the two leaders, he noted that Washington continues to exhibit a fluctuating approach. In a post on X, Ramesh highlighted that the US President has once again threatened to impose high tariffs on imports from India. He remarked that public events like 'Namaste Trump' and 'Howdy Modi', along with the personal warmth shown and social media praises, have not yielded significant benefits for India.
Concerns Over Tariff Threats
In his post, Ramesh pointed out that the Prime Minister's close friendship with the White House has not prevented the US from maintaining its 'sometimes warm, sometimes cold' stance towards India. He reiterated the threat that if India does not cease its oil purchases from Russia, the US would impose higher tariffs on American products imported from India. He emphasized that all the public displays of affection and social media endorsements from the US President have provided minimal advantages.
Congress Spokesperson's Critique
Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate accused the central government of failing to protect India's reputation. In a post on X, she stated, 'Trump stands there mocking India, humiliating it, and ridiculing it. The American senator beside Trump claims that the Indian ambassador is pleading with him to keep the President happy. Trump asserts that Modi has reduced oil imports from Russia under US pressure to please him. Such shameless bullies are mocking my country - yet there is not a word from the Prime Minister. Modi is a disaster - a weak, cowardly individual who cannot stand up to these bullies defending India's honor.'
Trump's Warning on Tariffs
This incident follows a new warning from US President Donald Trump regarding increased tariffs if India continues to import Russian oil, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is aware of his displeasure on this matter. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump emphasized the importance of keeping India satisfied regarding the issue of Russian oil imports. He described Prime Minister Modi as a very good person, noting that it was crucial for Modi to keep him happy, as they could quickly raise tariffs on trade.
