Congress Condemns Modi's Support for Israel

New Delhi: The Congress party has sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his recent trip to Israel, accusing him of exhibiting 'moral cowardice' at a time when global criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is intensifying.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress's general secretary for communications, stated that Modi is 'openly embracing' Netanyahu, who has caused widespread destruction in Gaza and is promoting illegal settlements in the West Bank.

Ramesh referenced historical moments, noting that on May 20, 1960, Jawaharlal Nehru visited Gaza and met with Indian UN peacekeepers there. He also highlighted that India recognized Palestine as a state on November 18, 1988, and issued a commemorative stamp in its support on November 29, 1981.

He remarked on social media, 'In contrast to the past, the current Indian Prime Minister is openly supporting an Israeli leader responsible for devastation in Gaza and illegal land expansions in the West Bank.'

'While the world criticizes his 'dear friend' Mr. Netanyahu, Mr. Modi's actions reflect moral cowardice,' Ramesh claimed.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, another Congress leader, expressed hope that Modi would address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza during his speech to the Israeli Parliament, urging him to advocate for justice for the victims.

In her post, she stated, 'I hope that the Honorable Prime Minister @narendramodi ji mentions the genocide of thousands of innocent men, women, and children in Gaza while addressing the Knesset on his upcoming trip to Israel and demands justice for them.'

Gandhi emphasized India's historical commitment to truth, peace, and justice, urging the nation to continue this legacy.

Modi's two-day visit to Israel commenced on Wednesday, aimed at strengthening defense and trade ties between the two nations. This marks his second visit to Israel in nine years.

During Modi's first visit in July 2017, the India-Israel relationship was elevated to a strategic partnership.

The Congress party has accused the government of neglecting the Palestinian cause, criticizing Modi's visit amidst ongoing Israeli attacks on civilians in Gaza.

Ramesh asserted that the Modi administration's statements regarding support for Palestinians are hypocritical, claiming that the government has effectively abandoned them.
