Congress Criticizes Modi's Foreign Tour Amid Manipur Crisis

Congress Questions PM Modi's Priorities
New Delhi, June 15: The Congress party has expressed its discontent with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent three-nation tour, highlighting his apparent lack of empathy towards the ongoing crisis in Manipur. The party emphasized that while Modi exhibits energy and enthusiasm for international visits, he should also show compassion for the suffering citizens of Manipur.
According to Congress, this marks Modi's 35th international trip since May 2023, and they criticized him for neglecting the situation in Manipur, where the people are enduring significant hardships.
"The Prime Minister is set to depart for Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia today. He previously boasted about his mathematical prowess by referencing the (a+b)^2 equation in relation to India and Canada, but the situation has since deteriorated," stated Jairam Ramesh, Congress's general secretary for communications, in a post on X.
Ramesh further noted that when Canada seemed hesitant to extend an invitation to India, Modi's supporters claimed he would decline any invitation. However, he argued that Modi's actions have revealed the truth.
He pointed out that the Canadian Prime Minister has invited India to the G7 Summit alongside other non-G7 nations, acknowledging India's status as the fifth largest economy globally.
Ramesh suggested that Modi remind the Canadian leader that, according to the Niti Aayog CEO, India achieved the status of the world's third largest economy on May 24, 2025.
"This is Modi's 35th trip abroad since May 2023. He possesses the energy, excitement, and enthusiasm for these visits, but can he not find a fourth 'E'—empathy—for the people of Manipur, who continue to suffer?" Ramesh questioned.
He criticized Modi for not engaging with anyone from Manipur, including political figures, since May 3, 2023, labeling the Prime Minister's treatment of the state as disgraceful.
Ramesh also shared a video from 2015 where Modi used a mathematical analogy to illustrate the relationship between India and Canada.
The Congress party has been vocal in its criticism of Modi for not visiting Manipur and has condemned the government's handling of the ethnic violence that has plagued the northeastern state.
Since May 2023, over 220 individuals have lost their lives, and thousands have been displaced due to ethnic clashes between the Meitei community in the Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo groups in the surrounding hills.
On Sunday morning, Prime Minister Modi commenced his three-nation tour, which includes participation in the G7 Summit in Canada, as well as visits to Cyprus and Croatia to enhance India's bilateral relations with these nations.
Modi's first stop will be Cyprus, following an invitation from President Nikos Christodoulides.
Next, he will head to Kananaskis, Canada, on June 16-17 to attend the G7 Summit at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Finally, Modi will visit Croatia on June 18, invited by Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic.
