New Delhi, Oct 31: The Congress party honored the memory of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on the anniversary of her passing at Shakti Sthal in New Delhi this past Saturday.

Key figures from the party, including Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, National President Mallikarjun Kharge, and General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, gathered at Shakti Sthal to lay floral tributes in her memory.

Earlier, the Congress party shared a message on X, stating, "On the death anniversary of India's first female Prime Minister, a symbol of unwavering courage and determination, Smt. Indira Gandhi ji, we pay our humble respects."

In another post, they reflected, "We honor her bravery, strong leadership, and lifelong dedication to the unity, integrity, and progress of India."

Indira Gandhi, affectionately known as the 'Iron Lady of India,' was born on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, into a Kashmiri Pandit family. She was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, and Kamala Nehru.

National Integration Day, which is celebrated every year on November 19, aligns with Gandhi's birth anniversary and acknowledges her significant contributions to India's political, social, and economic landscape.

As India moves towards becoming a global power, National Integration Day serves as a reminder of Gandhi's role in fostering national unity. This observance was established by the Indian National Congress in 1985 to honor her efforts in promoting harmony.

The day is of great importance, providing a chance to celebrate India's diversity and emphasize the need for collective action towards the nation's development.

During her time as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her tragic assassination in 1984, Gandhi tirelessly worked to enhance national integration. Her political journey was marked by a steadfast commitment to unity and integrity.

Among her notable achievements was her decisive leadership during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, which resulted in the formation of Bangladesh. Her actions cemented her legacy as a leader with a clear vision and determination.
