Congress Celebrates Victory Against Modi's Delimitation Proposals Linked to Women's Reservation

In a significant political development, the Congress party has successfully defeated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's controversial delimitation proposals that were linked to women's reservation in the Lok Sabha. This outcome is being celebrated as a victory for democracy and the Constitution. Congress leaders have called for the implementation of a 33% reservation for women in the upcoming elections, emphasizing the need for legislative changes following the recent passing of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act. The defeat of the amendment bill has raised questions about the legitimacy of the Prime Minister's proposals, marking a pivotal moment in Indian politics.

Congress Defeats Delimitation Proposals in Lok Sabha

New Delhi: The Congress party announced on Friday that it has successfully thwarted what it termed the "malicious attempt" by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to associate their controversial delimitation proposals with women's reservation. This outcome was hailed as a significant victory for democracy and the Constitution.

The opposition party further stated that this defeat raises questions about the credibility of the Prime Minister, whom they referred to as the "non-biological, non-grihasthi PM."

In a statement on X, Congress's general secretary for communications, Jairam Ramesh, remarked, "The PM and HM's underhanded effort to connect their perilous delimitation proposals to women's reservation, which had already been resolved, has been decisively rejected in the Lok Sabha."

Ramesh emphasized, "This is a triumph for our democracy, federalism, and the Constitution. It also casts doubt on the legitimacy of the non-biological, non-grihasthi PM."

He outlined the next steps for the Modi administration, urging them to ensure a 33 percent reservation for women in the current Lok Sabha setup for the upcoming 2029 elections.

Ramesh noted that this has been a persistent demand from the entire opposition since September 2023, when Parliament unanimously passed the Nari Shakti Vandan Act 2023, which was only notified late last night.

His comments followed the recent defeat of the Constitution amendment bill aimed at implementing women's reservation in legislatures for 2029 and increasing Lok Sabha seats. The bill garnered 298 votes in favor, while 230 MPs opposed it, falling short of the required 352 votes for a two-thirds majority out of 528 total votes.
