Congress Candidate Critiques BJP Government Over Guwahati's Drainage Crisis
Mira Borthakur's Bold Stand Against Waterlogging in Guwahati
Guwahati, Mar 28: In the wake of relentless rainfall and significant waterlogging in various areas of Guwahati, Congress leader and Dispur candidate Mira Borthakur launched a fierce critique of the ruling BJP-led NDA government on Saturday. She accused the administration of neglecting the city's persistent drainage problems, despite its designation as a 'smart city'.
Despite the downpour, Borthakur took to the streets to showcase the harsh realities faced by the local populace.
She reported that her planned campaign events for the day were thwarted by flooding, which she labeled an 'artificial flood' resulting from inadequate urban management.
“I had numerous campaign meetings lined up, but they were all cancelled due to the flooding. This is not a one-off occurrence; it has been a recurring issue. Even the main thoroughfares are underwater,” she stated.
Borthakur emphasized that this issue is not new, having persisted for four to five years, significantly disrupting daily life and transportation.
“The government touts this as a smart city, yet after a decade, it has failed to effectively manage the drainage systems,” she expressed, voicing her exasperation over the ongoing waterlogging on key roads.
She mentioned receiving numerous complaints from residents, particularly from Rukminigaon, who urged her to observe the dire situation firsthand.
“People are in distress and reaching out for help. The government had ample opportunity during the dry months to clean and maintain the drains, but no action was taken. Now, they are only reacting during the rains,” Borthakur claimed.
Reaffirming her stance, she remarked, “This government has not prioritized the welfare of the citizens. The inability to manage essential civic infrastructure like drainage indicates a lack of foresight and accountability.”
Borthakur also took aim at the government's flagship slogan, highlighting a disconnect between promises and actual results.
“The Chief Minister speaks of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas', but had there been a similar commitment to resolving waterlogging issues, the current situation would be vastly improved,” she concluded.
