Congress Appoints B. Manikam Tagore as New President of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee
Leadership Change in Tamil Nadu Congress
On Saturday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced the appointment of B. Manikam Tagore as the new head of the Tamil Nadu Pradesh Congress Committee (TNPCC) effective immediately. This decision was confirmed through an official press release signed by AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal. The statement highlighted that Kharge has appointed Tagore to lead the state unit, while also acknowledging the contributions of the outgoing president, K. Selvaperaunthagai.
Political Shifts in Tamil Nadu
This organizational change coincides with significant political developments in Tamil Nadu, as on the same day, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) officially withdrew its support from the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA). This coalition had dominated Tamil Nadu's political landscape for nine years but has now formally severed ties with the DMK-led faction.
MDMK's Stance on Political Alliances
MDMK stated that its initial involvement in the alliance was to prevent "communal political forces" from gaining influence in Tamil Nadu and to uphold the principles of the Dravidian movement. The party criticized the arrangements that brought the AIADMK to power, which had only secured 47 seats in the assembly and was backed by Hindutva communal forces. MDMK argued that this undermined the SPA's claim of being ideologically and principled-based.
