Guwahati, Apr 7: During a press conference on Tuesday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge expressed confidence that the Opposition coalition will secure a majority in Assam's upcoming elections, targeting approximately 73 out of 126 assembly seats.
Speaking at a city hotel, Kharge stated, "The Congress-led alliance is poised to form the next government in Assam, aiming for 72-73 seats."
He criticized Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, labeling him as the "most corrupt" leader in India and called for a response from RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat regarding these allegations.
Kharge remarked, "No Chief Minister in India exhibits such arrogance and ego as Sarma. His focus is solely on his family's interests, and he is involved in various syndicates, including tea, education, coal, land, and betel nut."
He further accused Sarma's Cabinet colleagues of corruption, claiming they possess "thousands of crores in assets."
"I urge Mohan Bhagwat to comment on the corruption allegations against the Assam CM. I also request the Prime Minister and Home Minister to respond," Kharge added.
When questioned about Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera's claims regarding Sarma's wife holding three foreign passports and owning overseas assets, Kharge stated that all investigative agencies fall under the central government and should look into these accusations.
"An FIR has already been filed against Khera. Let them investigate. We will address the case as it unfolds," he noted.
Kharge also asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi lacks the authority to criticize Congress leader Rahul Gandhi or the Gandhi family, who have made significant sacrifices for national unity.
"Those with limited understanding label Congress as pro-Muslim and pro-Pakistan," he remarked in response to allegations of the party's minority appeasement.
