Congress Accuses BJP of Manipulating Bihar Rajya Sabha Elections
Political Tensions Rise Over Bihar Elections
On March 17, in New Delhi, the Congress party raised concerns regarding the absence of its MLAs during the Bihar Rajya Sabha elections, accusing the BJP of 'buying' political influence. The ruling party, however, dismissed these allegations, suggesting that the opposition should focus on managing its own members.
Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat expressed, 'The BJP purchases governments; these MLAs are still part of the system. It undermines democracy when individuals compromise their principles for financial gain or other motivations.' He mentioned that the party would gather reports from state leaders for a thorough review.
This controversy arose after several opposition MLAs failed to vote in the Bihar Rajya Sabha elections, igniting a political dispute between the ruling NDA and opposition factions.
In response, BJP representatives rejected the accusations, urging the opposition to maintain discipline among its members. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale stated, 'The opposition continues to make unfounded claims; they should focus on their own MLAs. We are capable of managing our own.'
He added, 'We can also handle other MLAs. The outcomes of the elections are not our responsibility. The NDA has successfully secured victories in multiple states, including Maharashtra, Bihar, and Haryana. If their members choose to leave, that is beyond our control.'
BJP MP Vivek Thakur criticized the opposition's leadership, asserting, 'A party that cannot manage its own MLAs reflects poor leadership. Instead of blaming others, they should concentrate on their own party and legislators. The NDA was expected to win all five seats, and we have achieved that.'
The NDA achieved a significant victory in the elections for five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar, with all its candidates emerging victorious, marking a setback for the opposition Mahagathbandhan.
The NDA's candidates included Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, BJP chief Nitin Nabin, Union Minister Ram Nath Thakur, Rashtriya Lok Morcha leader Upendra Kushwaha, and BJP candidate Shivesh Ram, all of whom won their respective seats.
During the voting process in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, 202 NDA MLAs participated, while 37 from the Mahagathbandhan cast their votes.
Notably, Congress MLAs Manoj Biswas, Surendra Kushwaha, and Manohar Prasad Singh, along with Rashtriya Janata Dal MLA Faisal Rahman, were absent during the voting.
Bihar Congress President Rajesh Ram claimed that the BJP had abducted three of their MLAs, stating that despite the BJP's power, these MLAs had maintained contact since March 13. He alleged that they were under house arrest.
In the first preference voting, Nitish Kumar, Nitin Nabin, Ram Nath Thakur, and Upendra Kushwaha won, while Shivesh Ram secured victory through second preference votes.
The Mahagathbandhan's candidate, A.D. Singh, received only 38 votes. In the second preference round, Shivesh Ram garnered additional votes, ensuring the success of all NDA candidates.
The Bihar Legislative Assembly consists of 243 seats, and the election was held to fill five Rajya Sabha positions. Despite six candidates contesting, the NDA's strong majority in the Assembly was pivotal in determining the results.
Currently, the ruling alliance has the backing of approximately 202 MLAs, while the Mahagathbandhan holds 35 MLAs, providing the NDA with a significant advantage.
