Concerns Rise Over Security of Lumding Flyover Amidst Theft Allegations
Security Issues at Lumding Flyover Construction Site
Under construction Lumding Flyover
Hojai, July 11: Recent developments have raised alarms regarding the safety of the Lumding flyover, which is currently under construction. Authorities discovered approximately 833 kg of suspected stolen steel reinforcement bars (TMT rods) believed to have been pilfered from the construction site.
This discovery occurred during a police operation at a scrap yard in Itabhata Chariali on Friday, reigniting concerns about the alleged theft of materials from one of Lumding's key infrastructure projects.
Law enforcement officials confiscated the steel rods from a scrap yard owned by Samchuddin Majumdar, a local resident, who has since been taken into custody for questioning.
According to police reports, Majumdar has a prior arrest record related to iron theft and has served time in prison. Although there is no direct connection established between this incident and his previous offenses, investigators are exploring potential links.
Initial investigations indicate that the stolen steel rods may have originated from the storage facility of Anupam Nirman Private Limited, the contractor responsible for the long-awaited Lumding flyover project. Authorities are currently verifying the source of the materials and how they ended up at the scrap yard.
The incident has garnered significant attention, as the flyover project requires substantial amounts of steel, cement, machinery, and other construction materials.
Sources involved in the investigation have indicated that this is not the first instance of theft reported at the construction site. Previous complaints have included the theft of steel rods, diesel, and other supplies, raising serious concerns about security measures in place.
During the interrogation of the scrap yard owner, police uncovered the name of another suspect, referred to only as "Sanju." Search operations are currently underway at various locations to locate him.
As of this report, no additional arrests have been made, and law enforcement has not confirmed the involvement of any individuals, stating that the investigation is ongoing.
Local residents have alleged that "Sanju" has been associated with iron theft allegations in the area for years, although these claims have not been substantiated in a court of law.
Investigators are working to trace the chain of custody of the recovered steel rods, including whether the scrap dealer knowingly acquired or stored stolen goods and if others were complicit in the theft and transportation of the materials.
Police are exploring all possible scenarios, including organized theft, illegal acquisition, and unauthorized transportation of construction supplies.
Community members have called on authorities to enhance security at the construction site by implementing better CCTV surveillance, stricter inventory checks, improved access control, and increased nighttime patrols.
However, neither the investigating agency nor the construction firm has officially acknowledged any security breaches at this time.
Efforts to reach Anupam Nirman Private Limited for comments regarding the seizure and ongoing theft allegations were unsuccessful by the time of this report.
Law enforcement has stated that the investigation is still in its early stages, and further arrests may occur.
