Political Leaders Demand Accountability

Imphal, May 8: O Ibobi Singh, the president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, has raised serious concerns regarding the response of security forces after violent incidents in the border villages of Kamjong district.
He labeled the situation as “very serious” and cautioned that ongoing unrest could worsen the law and order conditions in the state.
The violence, which occurred in the Indo-Myanmar border villages of Namlee, Z Choro, and Wanglee, has sparked renewed political scrutiny over the preparedness of security measures in this sensitive area. Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh has promised that strict actions will be taken against those responsible for the unrest.
In his remarks, former Chief Minister Ibobi Singh pointed out that the violence highlights significant issues regarding the deployment and responsiveness of security forces in border regions.
“The unfortunate events in the border villages near the Indo-Myanmar border are alarming. These areas are close to Assam Rifles posts, yet such an attack occurred. Both the Central and State Governments must take accountability and clarify their response,” Ibobi stated.
He further claimed that the frequency of violent incidents is contributing to an increasingly unstable environment in Manipur.
“With one incident following another, the situation in Manipur is becoming more perilous. Sensitive border areas remain exposed despite the presence of security forces, and only a limited number of state police are stationed in these regions. The governments cannot simply stand by while the populace suffers,” he emphasized.
Ibobi also warned that without immediate corrective actions, similar incidents could arise in other vulnerable parts of the state.
“What transpired yesterday in Kamjong district could easily happen elsewhere if adequate security measures are not implemented swiftly. It is the duty of both the Central and State Governments to protect the lives and properties of the citizens. Despite repeated assurances regarding law and order, effective actions against those responsible for violence and instability have yet to be taken,” he added.
Local Congress leader Victor Keishing echoed these sentiments, asserting that insufficient security arrangements in the border area contributed to the incident.
“The incident occurred due to the presence of only a few unarmed police personnel in the border areas. Despite the region's sensitivity and ongoing concerns from local residents, adequate security deployment has not been ensured,” Keishing remarked.
In response to the violence, Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh condemned the acts and stated that the government is closely monitoring the situation.
“I strongly condemn the violence reported this morning in the border villages of Namlee, Z Choro, and Wanglee in Kamjong district. Such acts are deeply concerning and unacceptable,” the Chief Minister expressed in a statement.
He assured that security forces have been instructed to take all necessary actions to restore peace and prevent further escalation in the affected areas.
“The Government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, and strict measures will be taken against those responsible,” he added.
Following the disturbances, the Chief Minister convened a series of high-level meetings with security officials and legislators to evaluate the current law and order situation in the state.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, DIG BSF Koirengei Suvvender Kumar and Commandant of 64 Battalion BSF Pankaj Kumar met with him at the Secretariat to discuss emerging security challenges and the necessity for a coordinated response.
“We reviewed the current law and order situation and discussed strategies to address emerging challenges in light of recent disturbances, focusing on a coordinated and proactive response,” the Chief Minister stated after the meeting.
Sources indicate that the Chief Minister later chaired a Cabinet meeting and engaged in discussions with NDA legislators regarding the Kamjong violence and the broader security landscape in Manipur.
