Injury Management Challenges in IPL

A representative from the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) has expressed worries regarding players competing with injuries during the Indian Premier League (IPL). This situation arises due to the pressures from franchises and financial incentives, complicating their rehabilitation process before returning to the national cricket board. The source stated, "The human body has its limits. Overuse and stress injuries, particularly in older athletes, can lead to unpredictable recovery times. Players often push through injuries in the IPL due to these pressures, leaving them to be managed by CoE physiotherapists who are unaware of their conditions. While the team and CoE physiotherapists prioritize player safety, this scenario complicates the decisions for selectors, coaches, and captains."

Growing Injury List for Team India

These comments come as India faces an increasing number of injuries ahead of their two-Test series against Sri Lanka. The latest player to be sidelined is left-handed batter Sai Sudharsan, who is out due to a toe injury sustained during the second India A Test against Sri Lanka A last month. Sudharsan had previously scored two centuries in the series before the injury and is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the CoE in Bengaluru.

He joins a list of injured players including Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Washington Sundar. Bumrah is out due to a left knee issue sustained during the second ODI against England last month, and Auqib Nabi has been called up to replace him in the Test squad.

Rana is recovering from a Grade 1 biceps femoris strain after returning from a significant right knee ligament injury that kept him off the field for four months, missing both the 2026 T20 World Cup and IPL 2026.

Reddy is also on the mend from a left quadriceps injury that caused him to miss recent tours to Ireland, England, and Zimbabwe, which he sustained while bowling against Afghanistan in June.

Washington Sundar will miss the first Test due to a hamstring injury, and Akash Deep is unavailable due to stress reactions in his back.

Additionally, there are concerns regarding the fitness of India captain Shubman Gill, who did not participate in the opening day of practice against Sri Lanka Cricket XI after injuring his right finger.

Focus on CoE's Role in Injury Management

The rising injury concerns have highlighted the importance of the CoE's collaboration with team management and selectors. Laxman previously mentioned that there is effective communication between the CoE, team management, support staff, and the selection committee regarding player fitness and rehabilitation.
