Dhubri, Dec 24: In the wake of a heightened crackdown on suspected illegal immigration in Assam, a troubling incident has surfaced in Gauripur town, raising alarms about forged identity documents and potential human trafficking activities.
On Wednesday, local authorities detained a woman believed to be a national of Bangladesh for allegedly holding counterfeit Indian identity papers.
Law enforcement officials are investigating possible ties to illegal immigration and organized trafficking syndicates.
Initial reports suggest that the woman, named Rubia Akhtar, is thought to have entered India unlawfully and, with the help of an intermediary, acquired an Indian Aadhaar card using a fictitious identity.
According to police sources, this forged document was purportedly utilized to facilitate the 'placement or sale' of women for employment in Delhi.
It has been reported that the woman escaped from Delhi and traveled to Gauripur via Cooch Behar in West Bengal, where she was subsequently apprehended by local police.
Authorities believe she adopted a Hindu identity, going by the name 'Jhumur Roy' after her entry into India, suggesting a premeditated plan.
Investigators are examining whether this identity change was part of a broader organized network involved in illegal migration and document forgery.
Police have noted several unresolved questions during the investigation, including the authenticity of the woman's statements and the possibility of deeper conspiracies at play.
Additionally, investigators are exploring any connections between this case and a private healthcare facility known as Gauripur Popular Hospital, with officials scrutinizing the extent of the institution's involvement.
Another critical aspect under review is why the Cooch Behar Police allowed the woman to proceed to Gauripur without taking action at their location.
Authorities are also looking into claims that approximately nine women were brought into India under the guise of employment, only to be sold or trafficked.
There are allegations that Muslim women were given forged Hindu identities to enable their illegal residency and movement within the country.
This case has reignited concerns regarding the ongoing influx of illegal Bangladeshi migrants into Assam and the organized networks that exploit vulnerable individuals.
