Concerns Rise Over Electric Vehicle Security in Delhi Amid Viral Video Claims
Viral Video Sparks Alarm Over EV Safety
A rapidly circulating video on social media has raised significant concerns regarding the safety of electric vehicles (EVs) in Delhi's transportation sector. The footage allegedly suggests that e-rickshaws operating on the streets of Delhi can be remotely disabled via a Chinese mobile application. In light of the seriousness of this issue, the Delhi government has promptly taken notice. Responding to the controversy, Delhi's Transport Minister Pankaj Singh stated on Thursday that the government is thoroughly investigating the matter. He indicated that the police may also take stringent legal action against such digital interference, as controlling or disabling any vehicle through an external app is entirely illegal.
Investigation Underway as Concerns Grow
The viral videos have raised questions about the security of electric vehicles and the potential misuse of digital technology. Singh confirmed that the Delhi government is aware of the video and is investigating the allegations. He mentioned, "We are informed about the ongoing situation on social media, and the government is looking into it. I believe the police will take action as this is illegal." His comments come at a time when discussions are intensifying regarding whether external apps could interfere with the operation of electric vehicles and if additional safety measures are necessary.
Delhi's EV Policy Aims to Boost Adoption
The Transport Minister also emphasized the objectives of the recently notified Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2026. He stated that the government is focusing on promoting a significant shift towards electric mobility through financial incentives and improved infrastructure. According to Singh, electric cars are gradually becoming more affordable, and increased competition in the market is expected to drive prices down further.
Incentives for EV Adoption
Singh noted, "I believe that EV cars are now available in lower price ranges. We are providing incentives for scrapping and purchasing. Gradually, as more people begin to adopt EVs, the prices will decrease due to increased competition in the market."
Scrapping Incentives Up to ₹1 Lakh
Under the Delhi EV Policy, eligible buyers can receive scrapping incentives of up to ₹1 lakh if they purchase a new electric vehicle within six months of scrapping their old vehicle. This incentive is linked to a Certificate of Deposit (CoD), which is issued after scrapping the old vehicle at an authorized facility. The CoD serves as proof of scrapping and helps eligible buyers benefit when purchasing a new EV.
Plans for Extensive Charging Infrastructure
Reassuring residents that charging infrastructure will not hinder the transition to electric mobility, Singh announced plans to install approximately 32,000 charging points in the national capital over the next four years. He stated, "I assure the people of Delhi that there will be no issues regarding infrastructure. We will set up around 30,000 charging points in the next four years. With the implementation of the EV policy, people should adopt electric vehicles without any concerns about charging or infrastructure." The expansion of charging stations is expected to alleviate concerns related to the increasing number of electric vehicles on Delhi's roads.
Exemptions on Road Tax and Registration Fees
The Delhi government has also announced significant financial relief for those interested in purchasing EVs. According to the notified policy, all electric cars registered in Delhi with an ex-showroom price of up to ₹30 lakh will be completely exempt from road tax and registration fees. This initiative aims to make electric vehicles more affordable while contributing to the long-term goal of reducing pollution from vehicles and promoting cleaner transportation methods.
