Demographic Shifts in Assam

In light of discussions surrounding demographic changes in regions with significant Hindu populations, Numal Momin, the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Assembly, has asserted that 15 districts in the state have transitioned to being Muslim-majority. He accused the Congress party of having an agenda aimed at transforming Assam into an Islamic state. Momin stated in an interview that currently, 15 districts have become predominantly Muslim, a stark contrast to the time of independence when none were.

Momin elaborated that the infiltration from lower Assam to central and upper Assam is occurring in a systematic and strategic manner. He recalled that during his childhood, the Golaghat district, particularly in the Sarupathar area, had only 60-70 Muslim households, a number that has now surged to between 6,000 and 7,000. This example illustrates the gradual migration of Muslims from lower Assam to the central and upper regions, posing not just a demographic shift but a serious threat to the indigenous Assamese identity.

He noted that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed concern over this issue, which is alarming not only for the Chief Minister but for every Assamese and indigenous person. Momin emphasized that it is time to take action against the conspiracy that is systematically undermining the Assamese people, culture, and heritage. He praised the Chief Minister's eviction campaign but insisted that more such initiatives are necessary.
