Technical Issues Force Flight to Turn Back
The first incident occurred this morning when a SpiceJet Boeing 737 took off from Delhi bound for Leh. Flight SG 121 departed at 6:08 AM but encountered a technical problem within an hour of takeoff. Reports suggest a potential engine failure, prompting the decision to return to Delhi as a precaution. The aircraft landed safely at 6:49 AM with approximately 150 passengers onboard. Airport authorities had already prepared for an emergency landing, and a spokesperson for SpiceJet confirmed that while there was a technical issue, there was no fire warning in the cockpit. All passengers were safely disembarked without any injuries, averting a potentially serious situation thanks to the pilot's timely decision and the airport's readiness.
Tragic Air Ambulance Crash in Jharkhand
In a more tragic event, an air ambulance crashed in Chatra district of Jharkhand on Monday evening. The aircraft, which was en route from Ranchi to Delhi, took off at 7:11 PM. Shortly after takeoff, it requested a route change due to adverse weather conditions. According to sources at Ranchi airport, the flight established initial contact with Kolkata ATC and requested a diversion due to the weather. However, contact was lost approximately 23 minutes after takeoff at 7:34 PM, with the last known location reported to be about 100 nautical miles southeast of Varanasi. Local villagers reported hearing a loud explosion and witnessed a large object falling from the sky, leading to the discovery of wreckage later that night.
Investigation Underway for the Crash
The crash involved two pilots, a patient named Sanjay Kumar, Dr. Vikas Kumar Gupta, paramedic SK Mishra, and two assistants. Shubham Khandelwal, the SDPO of Simaria, confirmed that all seven individuals perished, and their bodies have been recovered. The Deputy Commissioner of Chatra, Kirti Shri, indicated that initial assessments suggest a storm may have caused the accident, although the exact cause will be determined after a thorough investigation. A team from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau and experts from Delhi have been dispatched to the crash site, and efforts to recover the black box are ongoing. This marks the second incident involving a small aircraft within a month, following the recent death of Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a similar accident, raising further concerns about the safety of small aircraft travel in the country.
