Community Voices Alarm Over Border Incursions

In Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Subansiri district, the Nah tribal community has expressed serious concerns regarding alleged Chinese incursions near the international border. They claim that over the past six years, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) has taken control of significant portions of their traditional grazing lands, hunting grounds, and agricultural fields. Recently, the Nah Welfare Society submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Upper Subansiri, urging immediate intervention and investigation into the situation.

Memorandum Highlights Community's Grievances

According to a report by a prominent English newspaper, the president of the Nah Welfare Society, Keru Chader, stated in the memorandum that areas where community members once roamed freely, gathered forest products, and grazed their livestock are now under the control of the Chinese military. He accused China of escalating its activities in several border areas, strategically establishing control over critical locations.

Increased Chinese Activities in Key Areas

The community has reported a surge in Chinese activities in five significant locations within the Takshing revenue area. These include Oying in the Asafila region, Paniyar in the Chujarata area, Marpan in Maranafe, the Potrang Lake area, and Tindingtang. The Nah Welfare Society asserts that these regions were under their traditional control until 2020 but have gradually fallen victim to Chinese encroachments. They also highlighted that some of these sites hold religious and pilgrimage significance, intensifying local emotional concerns.

Allegations of Infrastructure Development by Chinese Forces

The memorandum further alleges that the Chinese military has constructed roads and military camps within Indian territory. The community claims that there has been a notable increase in Chinese activities in the Takshing border area over the past decade to fifteen years, aimed at expanding territorial control. Locals express that the situation has become alarming, with Indian territory gradually slipping away.

Trust in Indian Army Amid Rising Tensions

Despite these concerns, the Nah Welfare Society has expressed confidence in the Indian Army. Keru Chader emphasized that they have no doubts about the army's loyalty and dedication, which has been safeguarding the border for years. However, he noted that the current pace and intent of Chinese activities appear extremely dangerous, representing a serious issue not just for the local community but for national security as well.

Legislator Calls for Official Investigation

Meanwhile, Nakap Nalo, the legislator from the Nacho assembly constituency, has also deemed the matter serious, stating it pertains to national security and should be officially verified by the administration. He warned that if the local community's allegations are validated, it would be a deeply concerning situation. The legislator urged the administration and relevant agencies to conduct a thorough investigation.

Lack of Official Response from Authorities

As of now, there has been no official response from the district administration or the state government regarding the entire issue. Reports indicate attempts to contact senior officials, including the Deputy Commissioner of Upper Subansiri, Gambo Tasso, but no comments have been made available. This silence from the administration has left the local populace in a state of confusion and concern.

Ongoing Tensions in the Border Region

Experts believe that the border area of Arunachal Pradesh has long been a sensitive issue between India and China, with periodic tensions and allegations of incursions surfacing. The recent claims made by the Nah community have once again raised questions about border security and the safety of the local population.

Call for Increased Surveillance and Action

Local residents warn that if effective measures are not taken promptly, the situation could worsen in the future. The community has urged both the central and state governments to enhance surveillance in border areas, ensure the safety of locals, and investigate the alleged encroachments for appropriate action. All eyes are now on the government's and administration's next response.
