Adulteration Issues in Dairy Products

The Food Safety Department's recent actions regarding the adulteration of milk and dairy products in Uttar Pradesh have raised significant concerns. Investigations have revealed serious irregularities in the quality of milk and dairy items across various locations. However, the claim of a daily supply of 20,000 liters of fake milk in the state lacks independent and official verification, making it essential to treat this figure as a reported assertion rather than a confirmed fact.

Findings from Recent Investigations

According to a report, during inspections conducted between April 2025 and March 2026 in Agra, out of 1,352 food samples tested, 497 did not meet the required standards. The report also highlighted issues related to the presence of water and synthetic milk in the milk samples.

In August 2026, the Uttar Pradesh government decided to prohibit the production, storage, and open sale of analog dairy products. The government indicated that investigations uncovered the use of materials such as refined oil, various types of fats, and soy products in some dairy items.

Increased Crackdown on Adulteration

The Food Safety and Drug Administration of Uttar Pradesh has intensified its inspections and raids on food products. Over the past nine years, the department has conducted more than 210,000 raids and collected over 264,000 food samples, with a significant number failing to meet standards, leading to legal actions in several cases.

Data indicates that some samples were deemed unsafe, while others did not comply with quality standards or violated labeling regulations.

Previous Cases of Fake Milk Supply

Instances of fake milk production and supply have been reported in Uttar Pradesh before. In July 2024, the Food Safety Department took action against a network involved in producing counterfeit milk, which was reportedly being supplied to Delhi-NCR.

These incidents highlight the ongoing challenge faced by the Food Safety Department regarding the quality of milk and dairy products, prompting a focus on sample testing, raids, and adherence to regulations.

Importance of Consumer Vigilance

Milk is a staple food item, and its quality is directly linked to consumer food safety. When there are doubts about the quality of a product in the market, consumers should refrain from trusting unverified claims circulating on social media and instead follow the complaint or investigation process through relevant food safety authorities.

Currently, the figure of 20,000 liters of fake milk being supplied daily has not been substantiated by official data. Nevertheless, government investigations and actions regarding adulteration in milk and dairy products in Uttar Pradesh are ongoing.
