CPI(M) MP Criticizes Tea Meeting
On Tuesday, following the conclusion of the winter session of Parliament, CPI(M) MP John Brittas expressed his concerns regarding Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi's participation in a tea gathering with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders. Brittas remarked that this action sends a misleading message to the public, especially since it occurred just hours after the BJP's efforts to undermine the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
Brittas stated that such actions are detrimental to the unity of the India Alliance, distancing his party from endorsing this kind of camaraderie. Speaking to a news outlet, he noted, "This has been a matter of concern for us... Seeing Priyanka Gandhi and others sitting with the Prime Minister at a tea party is not something we appreciate. We expected better judgment from them. I can also tell you that we have avoided such tea parties over relatively minor issues. During the last monsoon session, we stayed away because the government was not willing to discuss the SIR. Previously, we also refrained from participating when the Waqf Bill was forcefully passed... This was a much larger issue compared to those."
He further criticized the tea meeting, describing it as a spectacle. Witnessing such an event just hours after the desecration of Mahatma Gandhi's statue was not only tragic but also conveyed a misleading message to the citizens. He stated, "I do not support this kind of friendship, which is harmful to the unity of the opposition and the welfare of the country's impoverished people." Priyanka Gandhi attended the tea party hosted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at the end of the winter session, where she was seen sitting next to PM Modi.
