Concerns Raised Over ICE's Treatment of Witnesses in Houston Shooting Case
Allegations of Coercion by ICE
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is facing serious allegations of pressuring witnesses involved in the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo to voluntarily leave the country. This incident occurred on July 7 in Houston, Texas. Juan Proaño, the CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), reported that Araujo's brother and two colleagues, who witnessed the tragic event, are currently detained by ICE. They are reportedly being urged to sign documents for their deportation.
Proaño emphasized to The New Republic that these witnesses possess crucial information regarding the incident. He further stated to MeidasTouch that ICE appears to be attempting to eliminate them as potential witnesses.
Details of the Incident
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican national and father of three, was shot and killed by an ICE agent while en route to work in Houston. His family revealed that he had resided in the U.S. for 35 years, ran a small construction business, and was in the process of obtaining legal status. On the morning of the incident, he had breakfast with his wife before picking up his co-workers for a construction job when they were stopped by ICE officers in unmarked vehicles.
Video footage from the scene, as reported by NBC News, shows several individuals lying on the ground next to Salgado Araujo while officers called for backup, although the shooting itself was not captured on camera.
The Department of Homeland Security stated that Salgado Araujo allegedly attempted to evade arrest and used his vehicle in a way that threatened an ICE officer, prompting the officer to fire in self-defense. Salgado Araujo sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
Demands for an Independent Inquiry
The Department of Homeland Security has informed The Independent that its Office of Inspector General is conducting an investigation into the shooting, while the FBI's Houston office is looking into the alleged assault on a federal officer. LULAC has called for a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident, urging authorities not to take ICE's account at face value. They have requested the release of body camera footage, surveillance videos, radio communications, and witness testimonies. However, Homeland Security noted that the officers involved were not equipped with body cameras due to partial government shutdowns.
Additionally, LULAC referenced a previous incident involving Marimar Martinez, where ICE officers claimed a suspect attempted to run them over, but the charges were later dropped by prosecutors.
At a recent press conference, Salgado Araujo's son, Ronaldo Araujo, expressed his heartbreak, revealing that he learned of his father's death through a social media video instead of official channels. He recognized his father not by appearance but by his voice pleading for help while lying injured on the street.
According to Proaño, all identifying information was removed from Salgado Araujo before he was taken to the hospital as a John Doe. His family is now seeking legal help to recover his body and arrange for his funeral.
