Chidambaram Voices Concerns
Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram expressed his apprehensions on Thursday regarding the Election Commission's (EC) recent decision to replace the state's Chief Secretary. He referenced a prior Supreme Court ruling that cautioned the electoral body against becoming 'entrenched in its own empire.' In a post on X, Chidambaram noted that a few years ago, the Supreme Court had warned the EC about this issue, describing it as a prescient remark. He emphasized that the Court's warning about the EC overstepping its boundaries has become even more pertinent in the current political climate. He cited the recent administrative transfers in Tamil Nadu and the treatment of TMC MPs as examples of potential overreach.
Stalin Criticizes Election Commission
Chidambaram further stated that the transfer of an honest, efficient, and impartial Chief Secretary in Tamil Nadu, along with the dismissive treatment of four TMC MPs by the Election Commission, seems to validate the Supreme Court's concerns.
Political Tensions Rise
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched a sharp critique against the Election Commission, accusing the constitutional body of acting 'unilaterally' and allegedly operating at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In a post on X, Stalin condemned the EC for being fully active in the electoral arena without directly promoting the BJP, and for now executing a one-sided and extreme political action by changing the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu.
Stalin's Strong Statements
He remarked that it is disgraceful for the Election Commission, which is tasked with conducting fair and free elections, to comply with orders under BJP rule. The constitutional protection granted to the EC was not intended for electoral maneuvers on behalf of the BJP. Stalin pointed out that the central government did not replace top government and police officials in other states where assembly elections were held. On Wednesday, the Election Commission appointed Sai Kumar as the new Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu, succeeding N. Muruganandam. These comments come amid escalating political tensions in Tamil Nadu, where opposition parties are questioning the impartiality of institutions and the decisions made by the Election Commission during the election period.
