Chidambaram Voices Alarm Over Chief Secretary Replacement

Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has expressed his apprehensions regarding the recent actions of the Election Commission (EC) concerning the replacement of the Chief Secretary in Tamil Nadu. He referenced a prior Supreme Court ruling that cautioned the EC against 'usurping power within its own domain.' In a post on X ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections, Chidambaram noted that the Supreme Court had previously warned the EC about overstepping its boundaries, describing it as a prescient remark.

Criticism from Chief Minister MK Stalin

Chidambaram further stated that the transfer of an honest, capable, and impartial Chief Secretary, along with the Election Commission's dismissive treatment of four TMC MPs, seems to validate the Supreme Court's concerns. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also criticized the EC, accusing it of acting unilaterally and allegedly following directives from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In a post on X on Wednesday, Stalin condemned the EC for being actively involved in the electoral process without directly promoting the BJP, and for its extreme political actions by replacing the Chief Secretary. He added that it is disgraceful for the EC, which is responsible for conducting fair and free elections, to comply with orders under BJP rule. The constitutional protection granted to the EC was not intended for electoral manipulation by the BJP.

Political Tensions Escalate

Stalin also pointed out that the central government has not replaced top government and police officials in other states conducting assembly elections. On Wednesday, the Election Commission appointed Sai Kumar as the new Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu, replacing N. Muruganandam. These developments have heightened political tensions in Tamil Nadu, with opposition parties questioning the impartiality of institutions and the decisions made by the Election Commission during the election period.
