Concerns Over Public Safety Rise After Lewd Remarks Incident in Guwahati
Incident Sparks Safety Concerns
Guwahati, Feb 23: Following a woman's report of inappropriate comments made towards her while walking near the Katia Dolong railway bridge in Jalukbari, local police detained two suspects on February 23. This incident has reignited discussions about public safety in various areas of the city.
The individuals apprehended have been named as Hannan Mallick from Barpeta and Tanu Borah from Palashbari.
The complainant stated that the incident took place in the morning as she was on her way to the Jalukbari bus stop close to the railway bridge.
One of the suspects allegedly made an inappropriate remark, asking her, “What’s your price?”, which left her stunned by the audacity displayed in a busy area.
Upon attempting to take a photo of the accused, they fled the scene.
She promptly contacted the emergency helpline at 112 to report the incident. Officials from the Jalukbari Police Station reassured her that regular patrols are conducted in the vicinity and promised swift action.
Within a few hours, police detained two individuals related to the case.
A senior police official commented, “Two individuals have been apprehended regarding the eve-teasing incident in Jalukbari. Necessary actions are being taken.”
This incident has once again highlighted the safety issues raised by locals regarding certain areas in Guwahati, especially after dark.
Residents frequently mention places like GS Road, Ganeshguri, and Jalukbari as hotspots for anti-social behavior during the evening.
According to locals, the city presents a stark contrast—vibrant and organized during the day, yet less secure at night.
A woman from Adabari remarked that society seems to be becoming desensitized to such occurrences. “We have normalized this behavior happening right in front of us. We see it, we ignore it, and if we encounter it, we simply choose a different path. This is not a lasting solution,” she expressed.
Another resident from Borthakur Mill Road in Ulubari echoed similar sentiments, noting that despite periodic police interventions, the presence of anti-social elements tends to return. “There have been numerous instances where police have intervened. Recently, they raided a small hotel in the area where such activities were occurring. For a month, things improved, but then it reverted to the norm. What can we do in such situations?” the resident questioned.
While the quick police response in this recent incident provided some comfort to the complainant, residents believe that ongoing vigilance and long-term strategies are essential for creating safer public environments throughout the city.
