Plastic Waste Management Unit Faces Operational Issues

Palasbari, Dec 26: Serious concerns have emerged regarding the effective use of public funds as the plastic waste management unit (PWMU) in Chhaygaon LAC, Kamrup district, has ceased operations just two months post-inauguration, despite significant financial investment in the project.

The facility was launched on July 25, 2023, with high hopes for enhancing plastic waste management in the region. However, it reportedly became non-functional shortly after its opening and has remained inactive since.

Sources indicate that mechanical issues led to the shutdown. While such problems can arise, members of the Chhaygaon Students’ Union have voiced their deep concerns regarding the unit's prolonged inactivity, which has persisted for nearly two years without any apparent efforts for repair or restoration.

This extended closure has drawn criticism towards the State government's development claims, particularly when a project financed with considerable public funds has been left unattended.

Initially, the unit was effective in collecting plastic waste from surrounding villages and conducting recycling activities. Its abrupt cessation has not only hindered waste management efforts but has also raised questions about the planning, upkeep, and accountability of government-funded initiatives.

It is noteworthy that training sessions on the operation and maintenance (O&M) of the unit were conducted under the Chhaygaon development block, during which tricycles designated for plastic waste collection were distributed to local gaon panchayats.

Residents and student organizations are now calling for immediate action from authorities to either restore the unit or provide clarity on its future, cautioning that ongoing neglect would represent a serious misallocation of public resources.
