Workers Raise Issues with Bonus Discrepancies

The workers claimed that the management had failed to provide a detailed breakdown of the calculations

Jorhat, Oct 9: Employees at Jagduar Bamun Bagan in Jorhat expressed their dissatisfaction regarding alleged inconsistencies in bonus payments as Durga Puja approaches. Many workers reported that they did not receive the full 20% bonus that the management had promised.

The management had announced a 20% bonus and started distributing the funds. However, numerous workers contended that the amounts they received were less than expected.

Additionally, they claimed that the management did not provide a clear breakdown of how the bonus amounts were calculated, leaving them confused about the determination of their bonuses.

“The issue is that they calculate the total bonus in one day, and we receive it in an irregular manner. As a permanent worker, I got Rs 10,810 as a 20% bonus. Whatever calculations they have made, they should show us the details so that we can also be at peace. Last year, I received Rs 11,600 as a 19% bonus, but this time I received less. We should receive around Rs 15,000 to Rs 16,000,” stated a tea garden worker.

She further claimed that despite being expected to adhere to strict work requirements, workers were deprived of basic amenities.

“The authorities demand that we report to work at 7 am without taking leave if we want the bonus. We lack basic facilities such as proper housing, bathrooms, and sufficient water supply. Yet, they continue to display their arrogance,” she alleged.

In response to the situation, the Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association called on the authorities to ensure transparency in the bonus distribution process.

“We have received reports from tea workers claiming they did not receive the amounts they were entitled to. We have communicated with the garden authorities and urged them to reassess the situation and verify how much each worker should receive. The calculations should be made public with proper documentation. It is unfortunate that such incidents occur just before the bonus,” remarked a member of the association.

Previously, on September 24, the Assam Cabinet approved a 20% bonus for workers of Assam Tea Corporation Limited (ATCL), along with an additional holiday during the festive season.
