A formal complaint has been lodged against Anurag Sharma, the newly elected Rajya Sabha representative from Himachal Pradesh. The allegations include failure to disclose property details and breaches of election regulations during his nomination. Advocate Nitasha Katoch from Dharamshala submitted the complaint to the Election Commission of India, the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, and the Returning Officer of Himachal Pradesh Assembly.
The complaint asserts that Anurag Sharma, who resides in Village Bir, Tehsil Baijnath, District Kangra, was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 7, 2026. However, his election affidavit reportedly omitted several land holdings located in Baijnath, Multhan (Kangra), and Jogindernagar (Mandi). This omission allegedly violates Section 33 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which requires candidates to fully disclose their and their family's movable and immovable assets.
Additionally, the complaint highlights undisclosed details regarding licensed weapons and raises issues under Section 9A of the Act. It claims that Sharma was serving as a government contractor at the time of his nomination, with ongoing contracts valued at ₹16 crore under the Public Works Department, potentially disqualifying him from contesting due to a conflict of interest.
Moreover, the complaint questions the rapid issuance of the election certificate by the Assembly Secretariat, suggesting possible procedural errors. It references Section 125A of the Act, which categorizes false or incomplete information in election affidavits as a criminal offense.
Advocate Katoch has called for a thorough and impartial investigation, stressing the importance of maintaining electoral integrity and enforcing legal standards without favoritism.
