In Himachal Pradesh, the rising issue of drug abuse, particularly the use of 'chitta,' has prompted social organizations and local communities to take action to protect the youth. This situation has drawn parallels to the severe drug crisis that once plagued Punjab, which became infamously known as 'Udta Punjab.'
Government Initiatives to Combat Drug Abuse
Acknowledging the dangers posed to the youth, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's administration has initiated a comprehensive campaign aimed at reducing drug abuse and ensuring a brighter future for the state's younger population. Motivated by this government effort, community members have also launched awareness initiatives to encourage young individuals to avoid drugs.
Promoting Sports as a Healthy Alternative
As part of these initiatives, sports, especially cricket, are being promoted as a constructive alternative to drug use. Through various cricket tournaments and youth engagement programs, the campaign seeks to instill values of discipline, teamwork, and healthy living among the youth.
Dhauladhar Cricket League 2.0 Kicks Off on March 11
In line with these efforts, the Dhauladhar Cricket League 2.0, referred to as a 'Mahakumbh of cricket,' is set to commence on March 11 in Dharamshala. The inaugural matches will take place at the Industrial Training Institute Shahpur and Arni University in Indora.
League Structure and Anti-Drug Message
The league promotes the slogan: “Chitte Par Chot, Cricket Se Shot” (Strike Against Chitta, Hit a Shot with Cricket). A total of 12 teams will compete, organized into four pools, with three teams in each. The top team from each pool will progress to the semi-finals, ensuring an engaging and competitive atmosphere.
Community Involvement in the Anti-Drug Movement
The Dhauladhar Cricket League Organizing Committee, which has previously hosted similar events in Kangra district to raise awareness about drug abuse, is overseeing the tournament. Committee member Kumar Sahil held a press conference in Dharamshala, urging the public, civil society organizations, and community leaders to support the campaign and encourage youth participation in positive activities that deter drug use.
A Diverse Array of Teams Competing
The league will showcase teams from various sectors, including government departments, journalists, celebrities, social media influencers, educators, and academic institutions. To foster healthy competition, the winning team will be awarded a cash prize of ₹51,000. Organizers are confident that merging sports with social awareness will reinforce the message that empowering youth and promoting drug-free lifestyles are interconnected.
