Communal Clashes in Tripura: Ten Arrested Amid Ongoing Tensions

Violence Erupts in Unakoti District

Agartala, Jan 12: Authorities have detained ten individuals linked to recent communal unrest in the Unakoti district of Tripura.

The clashes occurred on Saturday in Saidarpar, located in the Kumarghat sub-division, reportedly over the collection of funds for a local temple, according to police sources.

Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai confirmed that no new incidents of violence have been reported, with paramilitary forces actively patrolling sensitive areas.

"We have arrested ten individuals believed to be involved in the unrest. Prohibitory measures under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita are still in effect, and internet services remain suspended. We will assess the situation soon to determine if restrictions can be lifted," he stated.

Rai also mentioned that four police officers and six civilians sustained injuries during the clashes.

Birajit Sinha, the leader of the Congress legislature party, claimed he was barred from visiting the affected area.

"We intended to meet with the villagers impacted by the clashes, but police stopped us, citing security concerns. I strongly oppose this action," he expressed to reporters.

Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury criticized the ruling BJP government for failing to safeguard the minority community's lives and properties.

"While Kumarghat was engulfed in violence, the chief minister was preoccupied with a roadshow in Kanchanpur, showing no concern for the communal strife," he remarked.

Rajib Bhattacharjee, the state BJP president, condemned the violence and praised the police for their prompt actions against those responsible.
