Bogota, Aug 12: The recent 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia on Monday has resulted in a tragic death toll of 188, with 1,677 individuals reported injured, according to the Colombian Association of Capital Cities (Asocapitales).
Among the casualties, the city of Cali has reported 95 fatalities and 997 injuries, while Pereira has seen 79 deaths and 278 injuries.
President Abelardo de la Espriella announced that the earthquake has caused significant damage, affecting 1,575 homes and disrupting operations at six airports, leading to the suspension of commercial flights.
In response to the disaster, the Colombian government declared a national state of emergency earlier on Monday.
The Colombian Geological Service indicated that the earthquake occurred at 7:34 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located near San Jose del Palmar in the Choco department, at a depth of 96 kilometers.
The association is actively coordinating with local mayors and officials in the affected areas to monitor the situation, assess the damage, and determine urgent relief requirements.
Global leaders have expressed their support and solidarity with Colombia during this difficult time.
French President Immanuel Macron conveyed his condolences, stating that Colombia can rely on France's friendship and assistance. He expressed his heartfelt thoughts for the victims, their families, and all those impacted by the disaster, commending the courage of rescue teams working tirelessly to aid affected communities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also voiced his solidarity and urged people worldwide to extend their support to those affected.
