Clarification on Sutlej and Beas River Water Flow to Pakistan: What You Need to Know

Official Statement from the Ministry of Jal Shakti

New Delhi: On Thursday, the Ministry of Jal Shakti provided clarification regarding the flow of water from the Sutlej and Beas rivers to Pakistan, stating that such occurrences are limited to the monsoon season. Heavy rainfall in the river catchment areas can lead to significant flooding, which is when water may flow into Pakistan.

In response to a query in the Lok Sabha, Raj Bhushan Choudhary, the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, emphasized that water releases from these rivers happen only under exceptional conditions. This typically occurs when dam water levels rise to critical points, requiring controlled discharges to maintain dam safety.

Choudhary reiterated that outside of the monsoon floods, there is no regular flow of water from the Sutlej and Beas rivers into Pakistan.
