CJP's Protest Resumes After Violence
Following significant violence and intense clashes with law enforcement during the 'Chalo Parliament' march on Monday, the Cockroach People's Party (CJP) has restarted its protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Tuesday, July 21. Late-night gatherings of protesters were not obstructed by the police, who allowed for a peaceful demonstration. However, the Delhi police issued a stern warning that strict action would be taken against anyone disrupting public order.
CJP's Ground Movement Against Examination Irregularities
The CJP is a grassroots movement opposing paper leaks and alleged irregularities in the examination system. This initiative was sparked by comments from Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, who referred to the youth as 'cockroaches.' The group has been protesting at Jantar Mantar since June 20, gaining momentum after activists like Sonam Wangchuk and students from the leftist organization AISA joined a hunger strike.
Increased Security Measures by Delhi Police
As protesters have reestablished their platform at Jantar Mantar, the Delhi police have heightened security, particularly on routes leading to Parliament. While roads around Jantar Mantar remain open, additional police forces have been deployed at key locations due to concerns that protesters may attempt another march towards Parliament.
Opposition Leaders Expected at Protest Site
Several opposition leaders are anticipated to visit the protest site, prompting authorities to remain on high alert and prepared to manage any situation that may arise.
FIR Filed Over Violence During March
In the wake of the violence and vandalism during Monday's protest march, the Delhi police have registered an FIR against unidentified individuals at the Connaught Place police station.
CJP's Demands: Resignation of Minister and Release of Wangchuk
Representatives from the Cockroach People's Party met with Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda, reiterating their demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over irregularities in the NEET UG examination. In a post on X, CJP spokesperson Sourav Das stated that Nadda assured them their demands would be considered. However, he noted that the government did not make any firm commitments and reiterated that their protests would continue until their demands are met. CJP founder Abhijit Dipke declared that there would be no further negotiations with the government, stating that anyone wishing to engage with the protesters must come to the protest site.
Over 100 Police Officers Injured, 70 Detained
During the CJP protests, more than 100 personnel from the Delhi police and paramilitary forces sustained injuries. The clashes occurred when protesters attempted to march towards Parliament. According to police reports, several officers suffered fractures, raising concerns that the number of injured could increase as many are receiving treatment in various hospitals.
Investigation into Clashes and Detentions
Numerous videos circulating on social media depict the confrontations between police and CJP protesters. The police are currently investigating the authenticity of these videos, indicating that further actions may be taken based on their findings. Approximately 70 individuals have been detained; however, police clarified that those in custody are not students, and their personal information and backgrounds are under scrutiny. The clashes resulted in damage to 15 to 20 police vehicles, leading to the filing of FIRs under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
