New Delhi, Oct 11: Leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), including Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Saurav Das, were released after appearing before an Executive Magistrate at the Delhi Cantt Police Station on Sunday.
Ranka, the national spokesperson for CJP, confirmed that a press conference is scheduled for the afternoon. He stated, “We will hold a press conference at 2 pm,” as he exited the police station alongside Dipke and Das.
These leaders were initially taken into preventive custody by the Delhi Police upon their arrival in the capital, where they intended to protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, according to a senior police official.
Authorities invoked Sections 126 (security for maintaining peace) and 170 (arrest to prevent cognizable offences) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) against them, as per sources.
Additionally, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, who was also detained prior to the CJP protest, was released late Saturday night, an official reported on Sunday.
A police source mentioned, "He can be detained again, or further legal action might be taken if he attempts to go to Jantar Mantar despite prohibitory orders."
This detention occurred during a significant security operation in Delhi, where over 7,000 protesters were apprehended at various locations to prevent them from reaching Jantar Mantar, according to police sources.
Numerous opposition leaders, including former chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan, and Manik Sarkar, were also detained while trying to participate in the protest.
The CJP has reiterated its call for a protest at Jantar Mantar on Sunday, as police maintained extensive security measures, deploying more than 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel throughout the city.
Over 120 companies of Central Armed Police Forces are aiding the Delhi Police in managing the security situation. The New Delhi district has been segmented into 20 zones, with joint commissioners, deputy commissioners, and additional deputy commissioners overseeing the developments.
Special commissioners leading various units are also closely monitoring the situation.
The CJP and various opposition parties are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar due to alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
