CJI Gavai's Address on Constitutional Significance
On Saturday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai emphasized that the nation has consistently demonstrated unity and resilience during crises, attributing this strength to the Constitution. He made these remarks during a ceremony marking the inauguration of advocate chambers and a multi-level parking facility at the Allahabad High Court. CJI Gavai noted, "During the drafting of the Constitution, some argued it was too federal, while others claimed it was overly unitary."
CJI Gavai referenced Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's perspective, stating that the Constitution is neither entirely federal nor completely unitary. He affirmed, "What I can assure you is that we have established a Constitution that will keep India united and strong in both peace and war. Thanks to the Constitution, India has been progressing since independence. Today, we can observe the conditions of our neighboring countries, while India continues to advance post-independence. Whenever the nation has faced challenges, it has remained united and strong, which should be credited to the Constitution."
CJI Gavai further remarked that reaching out to every citizen in need of justice is a fundamental duty, emphasizing that all branches of government—legislative, executive, and judiciary—must connect with the citizens.
