CJI BR Gavai's Vision for Justice

Itanagar, Aug 11: On Sunday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai highlighted the importance of ensuring that justice is served promptly and affordably.

He stated that the judiciary, executive, and legislature are fundamentally established to provide justice to every citizen in the nation. Gavai emphasized the necessity for these branches to work together effectively to uphold democratic values.

“The judiciary, executive, and legislature do not exist for the benefit of lawyers, judges, or their members. Their primary purpose is to deliver justice to every individual in this country. I genuinely hope that every citizen receives justice swiftly and at minimal cost,” Justice Gavai remarked during the inauguration of the new, advanced court building for the Gauhati High Court’s Itanagar Permanent Bench in Naharlagun.

He acknowledged that despite facing various challenges over the last 75 years, India has remained resilient and united, progressing towards becoming a developed nation, a journey supported by the strength of the Constitution. He also emphasized the significance of the Northeast, pointing out that the Constitution includes special provisions to protect its tribal communities.

Regarding judicial appointments, Justice Gavai responded to a request for an increase in judges at the Gauhati High Court, assuring that he, along with the Union Ministers of Law and Parliamentary Affairs, would take “positive steps” should the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court present a formal proposal.

The inauguration was attended by notable figures including Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Arjun Ram Meghwal, among other dignitaries.

The newly constructed High Court complex, which cost Rs 135.35 crore, features five courtrooms, including one designated for the Chief Justice, and is equipped with modern amenities.
