CISF Boosts Security Measures at Airports Following Recent Terror Threats

Enhanced Security Protocols Implemented
New Delhi: On Saturday, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) announced the implementation of additional security measures to oversee cargo operations and the in-line hold baggage screening system at 69 civil airports across India as part of its counter-terrorism efforts.
A representative from the paramilitary organization stated that this initiative follows a directive from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) issued on May 9, which temporarily expands CISF's responsibilities in light of the recent terrorist incident in Pahalgam and the evolving security landscape.
This enhanced security arrangement is set to remain in effect until May 18, according to the spokesperson.
Typically, the CISF is responsible for screening passengers and their cabin baggage, while cargo and in-line hold baggage screening were previously managed by private security personnel hired by airlines and airport operators.
"The expansion of CISF's role is vital for strengthening security measures at all civil airports," the spokesperson emphasized.
He noted that the CISF has promptly taken action to resume oversight of cargo and baggage operations.
Additionally, the CISF will supervise the operations and security personnel of airport operators concerning the in-line hold baggage screening system.
The new directives also empower CISF personnel to conduct random inspections and manage access control to these critical airport facilities, the spokesperson added.
All airports under CISF's jurisdiction have already adopted the newly enhanced security system.
Before this directive, the CISF's role as the primary aviation security force did not explicitly cover direct security and screening of cargo operations and the in-line hold baggage screening system, officials clarified.
This decision is aimed at establishing an essential secondary layer of security checks to bolster aviation safety.
