CID Team Visits Abhishek Banerjee's Residence

On Friday, a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrived at the residence of Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and a Member of Parliament, in Kolkata. His legal representatives were also present at the location. This visit followed a lengthy interrogation session that took place on Thursday at the CID headquarters, Bhawani Bhavan, located in the Alipur area of Kolkata, where Banerjee was questioned for approximately five and a half hours regarding the signature forgery allegations.

TMC's Response to the Investigation

TMC legislator Madan Mitra informed a news media outlet that Abhishek Banerjee is fully cooperating with the investigation and intends to continue doing so. He stated, "They (CID) have come; it is their duty, and they are here for that reason. They seek cooperation from Abhishek Banerjee, and he is providing it. He has cooperated in the past and will keep doing so."

Lack of Clarity on CID's Intentions

Debashish Roy mentioned that the CID did not disclose the purpose of their visit. He expressed, "The CID has not provided us with any information. We are unaware of their reasons for being here. Once we receive more information and comply with the regulations, we will share further details." This investigation is linked to allegations of irregularities in a proposal presented in the West Bengal Assembly.

Background of the Case

The proposal in question involved the appointment of Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Asima Patra and Naina Bandyopadhyay as Deputy LoPs, and Firhad Hakim as the Chief Whip. On May 9, Abhishek Banerjee informed the Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly that the party had made decisions regarding the appointments during a meeting of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) legislative party. Subsequently, on May 18, the principal secretary of the West Bengal Assembly requested Banerjee to provide the minutes of the meeting, the proposal, and the signatures of the legislators present during the decision-making process. On May 20, he submitted a copy of the proposal and the attendance sheet, which indicated that 70 legislators were present at the meeting held on May 6.
