Christian Minority Leaders Back DMK Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections
Support for DMK from Christian Representatives
In the lead-up to the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, representatives from the Christian minority have expressed their backing for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its coalition. Raja Freeman, the chairman of the CSI Zion Church, articulated his support for the DMK, stating that both the Christian and minority communities stand with the ruling party, hoping for its continued governance in Tamil Nadu. Speaking to a news outlet, Freeman mentioned, 'We have gathered here today to show our support for the DMK party... We expect the DMK government to re-establish our Chief Minister, allowing him to secure his seat for the seventh time... The Christian and minority communities will support the actions of the DMK party.'
Challenges from Vijay's Party
The unity of religious leadership behind the DMK poses a significant challenge for actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), as they actively seek to penetrate this traditional voter base. Historically, Christians and Muslims, who make up about 15% of the total electorate, have consistently supported the DMK. However, Vijay, who is also a Christian, is attempting to attract this substantial voter bank through his party, TVK.
Vijay's Outreach Efforts
Vijay's efforts to connect with the minority community are evident, as his party's general secretary is meeting with bishops from various churches in Chennai. The elections in Tamil Nadu are scheduled for April 23, with vote counting set for May 4. The primary electoral contest is anticipated to be between the DMK-led 'Secular Progressive Alliance' (SPA), which includes Congress, DMDK, and VCK, and the AIADMK-led 'National Democratic Alliance' (NDA), which comprises BJP and PMK allies. This will mark Vijay's first election with TVK, and he aims to transform the upcoming elections into a triangular contest.
