Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Set to Attend BRICS Meeting in India

Beijing, June 18: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to visit India for the 16th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisors (NSAs) and High Representatives on National Security, taking place from June 22-23.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the visit on Thursday, stating that Wang Yi will be in India at the invitation of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
According to a ministry spokesperson's post on X, "At the invitation of India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, will attend the 16th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisors and High Representatives on National Security in India from June 22 to 23."
India, which holds the BRICS chair in 2026, is focusing on the theme 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.' This theme emphasizes a people-centric and humanity-first approach, as highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 2025.
On May 15, Xu Feihong, China's Ambassador to India, praised India for its successful hosting of the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting. He noted that the Chair's statement and outcome document reflect a broad consensus on various international and regional issues, the future of BRICS, and the need for reform in global governance and the multilateral system.
In a post on X, Xu Feihong remarked, "Congratulations to India on successfully hosting the BRICS FMM. In light of a complex global landscape, BRICS nations engaged in meaningful discussions on a variety of topics."
He further stated, "The Chair’s Statement and Outcome Document illustrate a wide-ranging agreement on international and regional matters, the future trajectory of BRICS, and the reform of global governance and the multilateral system. As the incoming Chair, China is prepared to collaborate with all partners to enhance solidarity and cooperation, and we look forward to welcoming colleagues to China next year."
India opted for a Chair's statement rather than a joint statement at the conclusion of the two-day BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting in New Delhi, citing differing perspectives among members regarding the situation in West Asia and the Middle East.
This high-level meeting was led by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and included participation from foreign ministers and senior representatives of BRICS member countries and partner nations.
Earlier in February, China's Executive Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu visited India for the BRICS Sherpa Meeting. During this visit, Ma Zhaoxu and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri engaged in the India-China Strategic Dialogue in New Delhi, discussing bilateral relations and exchanging views on global and regional issues, as well as other multilateral topics.
