Exam Integrity: A Comparative Look

In China, millions of students take the 'Gaokao', the national college entrance examination, prompting changes in air traffic routes and halting construction work near exam centers. In June 2025, over 13 million Chinese students participated in this exam, making it the largest in terms of student numbers, surpassing India's National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG). While the NEET-UG, organized by the National Testing Agency (NTA), faces controversies related to paper leaks, China has taken significant steps to ensure the Gaokao is conducted flawlessly. On May 3, approximately 2.2 million students sat for the NEET-UG, hoping to secure a place in medical studies. This exam serves as the sole standardized national entrance test for undergraduate medical (MBBS), dental (BDS), and AYUSH courses in India, ensuring merit-based selection and maintaining high standards for future healthcare professionals.

However, the hopes and dreams of millions were shattered when allegations of a question paper leak emerged just eight days after the NEET-UG exam, leading the NTA to cancel the May 3 test. Such controversies surrounding NEET are not new; a similar crisis occurred just two years prior in 2024. The 2026 paper leak incident highlights the ongoing failure of authorities to fully address systemic issues and protect the sacrifices and aspirations of countless students. Anand Kumar, a mathematics teacher and founder of 'Super 30', emphasized the need for stringent measures akin to those in China to prevent paper leaks. He stated, "It is essential to tighten regulations on coaching centers and enforce rules rigorously. The government should adopt strict measures similar to those in China."

Kumar further lamented the unfortunate nature of such incidents, noting that they demoralize students. By referencing the Chinese model, he pointed to Beijing's high-tech surveillance systems and the severe penalties for exam fraud, particularly in the context of the world's toughest exam, the Gaokao.
