China Urges Immediate Halt to Military Actions in West Asia Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions
China's Call for Peace in West Asia
Beijing, Mar 16: On Monday, China urged all parties involved to cease military operations in West Asia. This statement follows US President Donald Trump's appeal for nations, including China, to assist in maintaining the Strait of Hormuz as a secure route for international shipping.
The closure of this crucial waterway by Iran, in response to airstrikes from the US and Israel, has led to significant disruptions in global energy supplies and trade, resulting in the highest oil supply crisis and escalating oil prices worldwide.
China has also indicated that discussions are ongoing with the US regarding Trump's upcoming visit to Beijing later this month.
In response to Trump's request for China and other nations to send naval forces to ensure the strait remains 'open and safe,' Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, highlighted that the rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding areas have adversely affected the flow of goods and energy, undermining regional peace and global stability.
Lin reiterated China's call for an immediate cessation of military actions to prevent further escalation and to mitigate the potential negative impact on global economic growth.
Regarding Trump's suggestion that he might postpone his visit to China, which appears to be contingent on Beijing's response to his request for assistance in keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, Lin confirmed that both nations are in discussions about the President's trip.
Lin emphasized the importance of high-level diplomatic engagement in shaping China-US relations.
In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Trump remarked that China's dependence on oil from West Asia necessitates its involvement in a new coalition aimed at facilitating oil tanker traffic through the strait, especially following Iran's threats that have disrupted global oil flows.
"We'd like to know" if Beijing will assist before the trip, Trump stated. "We may delay," he added.
This weekend, Trump took to social media to encourage countries, including China, the UK, France, and Japan, to deploy naval vessels to ensure the strait remains 'open and safe.'
China, a key ally of Iran and a major importer of Iranian oil at reduced prices, has condemned the US-Israeli military actions against Iran and criticized the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei in US airstrikes.
