China Stands Firm Against US Military Threats to Nigeria Amid Christian Persecution Claims

China's Response to US Threats

Beijing: On Tuesday, China expressed its disapproval of US President Donald Trump's threats of military intervention in Nigeria, which stemmed from allegations regarding the persecution of Christians. China reaffirmed its support for the Nigerian government, emphasizing its commitment to guiding its citizens towards a development strategy that aligns with the country's unique circumstances.

Trump had stated that if Nigeria continued to permit the killing of Christians, the US would halt all aid to the nation and might resort to military action against Islamic terrorists.

In response to inquiries about Trump's remarks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning highlighted a statement from Nigeria's Foreign Ministry, which asserted that the US claims do not accurately represent the situation in Nigeria. The Nigerian government has been dedicated to combating terrorism, fostering interfaith harmony, and safeguarding the rights and lives of all its citizens.

Mao emphasized that as a comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly backs Nigeria in its development pursuits. She stated, “China opposes any foreign interference in the internal matters of nations under the guise of religion or human rights and denounces the arbitrary application of sanctions and military threats.”

Regarding reports of Venezuela seeking missiles and drones following US strikes on boats suspected of drug trafficking, Mao reiterated China's opposition to the use of force in the fight against drug cartels.

While China advocates for increased international collaboration to tackle transnational crime, it stands against the use of threats and force in international relations, which could destabilize peace in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Mao also criticized unilateral law enforcement actions against foreign vessels that exceed reasonable limits, urging the US to conduct its law enforcement and judicial activities within established bilateral and multilateral legal frameworks. She did not clarify whether China would provide military equipment to Venezuela, stating, “China's regular exchanges and cooperation with Venezuela are conducted between sovereign nations, without targeting any third party and free from external interference.”
