Commitment to Road Repairs
On June 6, during his visit to Sribhumi and Hailakandi, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma pledged that the roads affected by recent flooding in Barak Valley will be restored before the upcoming Puja celebrations.
He explained that due to the current monsoon conditions, immediate repairs cannot be undertaken. However, he assured that he would return after July to oversee the completion of the roadworks prior to the festival.
Sarma also mentioned that he plans to make another visit before the festive season.
In terms of flood protection measures, he stated that Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika will spearhead initiatives to reinforce embankments in at-risk areas.
Regarding the Gammon Bridge, the Chief Minister confirmed that repair efforts are in progress and are expected to be finalized by July 20.
He acknowledged that there might be some inconvenience during this period but emphasized that a long-term solution is being put in place.
On the topic of assistance for families affected by the floods, Sarma assured that all necessary support will be provided promptly.
He noted that a list of those impacted has already been compiled, along with their bank account information, and that direct cash relief will be issued as soon as the floodwaters recede.
While temporary shelters and food supplies have been organized, many individuals have lost their homes and possessions, he pointed out.
Sarma committed to a thorough assessment by the District Commissioner to ensure appropriate compensation is distributed.
Currently, over 5.6 lakh individuals across 16 districts have been impacted by the floods. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has also predicted thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas across 18 districts on Friday.
