BJP's Campaign Strategy in Silchar

Silchar, Mar 22: On the eve of the final nomination filing day, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a visit to Silchar to bolster organizational unity and energize the BJP's campaign efforts in the Barak Valley.

This visit occurred amidst growing concerns following ticket distributions, highlighted by the departure of Dholai MLA Nihar Ranjan Das and backlash on social media regarding Dr. Rajdeep Roy's candidacy for the Silchar LAC seat.

Upon his arrival, the Chief Minister engaged in private discussions with party candidates and three sitting MLAs—Dipayan Chakraborty, Nihar Ranjan Das, and Mihir Kanti Shome—who were not granted tickets. He later addressed the press, maintaining a calm demeanor and asserting that 'all is well' within the BJP in Cachar.

He confidently stated, 'We will secure 10 out of the 11 seats in Barak Valley. If AGP wins in Sonai, we will claim all 11 seats.'

However, this reassurance hinted at a larger political recalibration ahead of the nominations. By proactively engaging with stakeholders and addressing concerns early on, the leadership aimed to prevent individual grievances from causing electoral issues.

More importantly, Sarma reshaped the electoral narrative, suggesting that in much of Barak, the focus is not merely on winning but on the margin of victory.

In reinforcing candidate credibility, he went beyond standard endorsements. Sarma robustly defended Silchar candidate Rajdeep Roy, dismissing criticisms of his candidacy as fleeting noise and emphasizing his parliamentary contributions, including his role during the No Confidence Motion against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In Katigorah, Kamalakhya De Purkayastha was identified as a leading candidate based on internal evaluations, while figures like Cabinet Minister and Lakhipur MLA Kaushik Rai were positioned in contests characterized not by vulnerability but by the potential for significant victories. Bijoy Malakar from Ramkrishnanagar was also highlighted as a likely high-margin victor.

The Chief Minister aimed to counter opposition narratives at the constituency level, particularly in Katigorah, where he revisited Gautam Roy's 2021 defeat to question political loyalty, framing past losses as a result of internal dynamics rather than voter rejection.

Addressing the complex electoral demographics of the valley, Sarma struck a balanced tone, asserting that the BJP continues to garner support from segments of indigenous and 'nationalist' Muslim voters, while rejecting the notion of a consolidated 'Miya factor' in the area.

With Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president Nitin Navin, and other central leaders, along with party stalwarts like former MLA Dilip Kumar Paul, set to campaign, the BJP's strategy in Barak is entering a more intense phase.

Sarma's visit to Silchar is perceived as a pre-nomination reset, aimed at transforming internal discord into a display of unity, control, and electoral confidence.

While he acknowledged potential challenges for the BJP in areas such as South Karimganj, Algapur-Katlicherra, and parts of North Karimganj, the overarching message remained clear: in Barak Valley, the BJP is not preparing for a challenge but evaluating the extent of its potential victory.

In the meantime, prior to Sarma's visit, Dholai MLA Nihar Ranjan Das, who recently resigned from the BJP after being denied a ticket, declared that he would not run as an independent candidate and would instead support the BJP's success.

'Considering the sentiments of my supporters and the broader interests of the party, I have decided not to submit my nomination as an Independent. I will continue to work diligently as a BJP member to ensure the party's victory,' Das stated.
