Timelines for Heritage and Infrastructure Projects
Guwahati, Jan 6: During a recent visit to Upper Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma outlined specific timelines for significant heritage and infrastructure initiatives. He announced that the initial phase of the planned museum and National Freedom Movement Park at the historic Jorhat Central Jail is expected to be completed by February 2026.
Sarma expressed optimism about the project's progress, stating, “We aim to finish the first phase by February, allowing visitors to access the site. Further work will continue afterward.”
The museum and park, which is being constructed at a cost of Rs 134.9 crore across 66 acres, is inspired by the Cellular Jail museum in Port Blair. It is designed to honor the freedom fighters from Assam who were imprisoned at the Jorhat Jail during the Freedom Movement.
In terms of infrastructure, the Chief Minister mentioned that the long-awaited Jorhat flyover is close to completion and is anticipated to open by February 20.
He noted, “We are optimistic about finishing the flyover by February 20. Should there be any delays, it will be completed within 10 to 15 days afterward. Regardless, the flyover will be ready before Bohag Bihu.”
Regarding the ongoing case involving cultural figure Zubeen Garg, Sarma indicated that the state government plans to appoint a special public prosecutor following a Cabinet meeting on January 9.
He stated, “Once the special public prosecutor is in place, and if they suggest the need for a special court, we will consult the Chief Justice. The first step is to appoint the special prosecutor, and we will act according to their recommendations.”
When asked about seat-sharing arrangements for the upcoming Assembly elections, Sarma assured that the matter would be settled by mid-February.
He remarked, “We do not foresee significant issues regarding seat sharing within the BJP. Decisions will be made between February 15 and 20. I have already discussed this with Minister Atul Bora. For us, this is a straightforward process.”
